Rooney & Scholes Receive 3-Match Bans

The Old Trafford club were staggered to learn on Tuesday that both Rooney and Scholes must sit out the Premiership encounters with and Watford and Charlton later this month, plus the September 9 game against Spurs with as a result of their respective dismissals in the pre-season win over Porto in Amsterdam earlier this month.

It had been anticipated Rooney, at least, would be spared punishment by the independent three-man tribunal set up by the Football Association to hear United's appeal against the punishment.
